Firstly, I very much appreciate how the authors give us examples of metacommentary at the beginning of the chapter (138). This gives us an insightful understanding of what the topic is at and truly is, while also describing what metacommentary is in plain language afterward. These examples, along with the examples further on in this chapter, give us a strong sense of direction when read. Furthermore, the inclusion of such text serves as a straightforward guide as to what the author believes. This style of writing, as discussed in the book on page 140, sets the mood for whatever the author chooses to write. For example, the title subtitle of the chapter “But don’t get me wrong,” gives us a tone of disagreement with a further explanation as to why the authors feel that way. This explanation allows them to further elaborate their claims, which not only helps them generate text but also allows the room to generate a more elaborate insight into the art of metacommentary. It is also imperative to display how metatext can aid in the pursuit of text analysis throughout in-text discussion. Metacommentary sets the stage for “extract(ing) the full potential from your ideas, drawing out important implications, explaining ideas from different perspectives, and so forth” (Graff & Birkenstein, 141). Such analysis is crucial for developing a well-versed paper, especially for collegiate-level texts. Lastly, I loved how the chapter also gives insight into implementing smooth transitions in your writing. This section is very important in writing styles, as it will set you up to include further metacommentary to elaborate on your previous ideas. This move is crucial in clarification and for providing an in-depth justification as to why you stressed your metacommentary in a specific fashion.
