Journal #3
One item I found especially notable and thought-provoking from They Say, I Say’s, “The Art of Quoting” is the relation of quotations being like, if not orphans themselves. They are denoted as “words that have been taken from their original contexts and that need to be integrated into their new textual surroundings” (Graff et. al., 48). In this sense not only does this simile offer an original sense of perception but offers a memorable procedure for constant application. Additionally, I enjoy how the book references multiple examples over “The Art of Summarizing,” asking the reader thought-provoking questions to reflect and improve upon their writing style. For example, in the “Our Manifesto to Fix America’s Gun Laws,” under the Raise the firearms purchase age to 21. With reading this passage, it provokes the reader question the flow of the list provided and asks upon them to contemplate it.
